Q: Why should I see an exercise physiologist?
An exercise physiologist can help create an individualized exercise plan that will take into consideration your specific medical/health history, goals, exercise experience, physical limitations and personal preferences.
Q: What is an exercise physiologist’s background?
Exercise physiologists have master’s degrees in exercise physiology and are certified by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the gold standard in fitness professional certification. They have experience in working with patients with a variety of medical conditions, ages and backgrounds.
Q: Why do I need to see someone to help with exercise?
There are many sources of exercise misinformation and an exercise physiologist can help make sure that the plan you're following is the most appropriate and effective, even if you’re already exercising regularly. This includes information on how to best reach your exercise goals and help in developing strategies to incorporate exercise realistically and safely into your life.
Q: How long before I see the results of my exercise program?
Most people tell us they notice improvements in their energy levels and their ability to manage stress after only a couple of weeks. This is usually followed by subtle physical changes, such as clothes that fit a little more loosely. Finally, after about six weeks, most see a change in the numbers on the scale and improvements in physical functionality and health conditions, such as improved heart rate and blood pressure control.
Q: When can I schedule a follow up fitness assessment?
After about 6-12 months of consistent exercise. The components of exercise that are measured with fitness assessments, such as muscle strength and body fat percentages, improve gradually over time and re-testing too soon won’t accurately reflect your progress.
